Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest

Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest, located in the village of Kukuh, District Marga, Tabanan Regency, approximately 40 minutes from Kuta by vehicles following the road of Denpasar - Bedugul, until at Village Denkayu Mengwi turn left approximately 5 km.

CONDUCT PHYSICAL purification and BEHAVIOUR (Kayika).

There are three main things that must be controlled, namely:

1. No harm, torture, let alone to kill other creatures.
2. No cheating, so the resulting harm anyone.
3. No adultery or other similar.

So ten things important in the implementation of the Tri Kaya Parisudha accordance with what is described in the book of Saracamuscaya. Tri Kaya Parisudha practice in daily life is necessary

IMPLICATIONS OF FAITH BEHAVIOR

Belief in karma should take the implications to the behavior of hard-working, responsible and honest.

Working hard / diligent: because by working harder he becomes a better human being. Happiness lies in the effort, the greater the effort, the greater the happiness.
Responsibility: if something bad happens, people who believe in karma, the first will do introsfection or mulat sarire, what's wrong with him.This is a sign he admitted responsibility and want to fix the mistake. He will not blame other parties (God, Satan or others). Although other parties may be one factor, but he can not fix them.
Honest: since when do no good, bad results will happen to these people. In karma there is no atonement for sins through worship, such as fasting. Fasting, asceticism, contemplation and even prayer, is for our benefit, for clarity, serenity and peace of mind and heart, for our mental health, to deepen spirituality.Just as exercise to strengthen the body of the person, not to nourish God.

Some teach that worship is due, and to God. This is the way religious childhood. When we child, we eat, shower or learning for fear of their parents. But as adults, we do all that because it was aware of the benefits for themselves.

Answering Fundamental Questions

Karma related to the question: Why are people in this world is very different?. There are good but suffer. There is less good, but life right?.This is clearly not fair. Differences or injustice is even starting from birth. There are born healthy, handsome and smart people are at nice home or in power.There is also the opposite.There are several answers to this fundamental question.

First ....

Fate. God has determined the fate of every human being before they were born into this world.

"The rich palace premises,

Poor people under the bridge,

God raised and lowered them,

And have them determine the land ".

(All bright and beautiful thing, English folk song).

In the Islamic religion is described as the baby was 40 days at his mother's womb, God blew the spirit, and when it is determined his fate.If God wiped the back of the right, the child will someday be happy or rich and powerful and when he died, after the Day of Resurrection and final trial will be the inhabitants of heaven.On the other hand if God wiped the back of the left, the child will later suffer or be evil and when he died, were tortured in the grave, after the Day of Resurrection and final trial will be companions of Hell.

This was absurd. What are the courts for, if someone was destined before his birth? And why someone who was destined to be evil, should be punished at all times, even though he only lived just destiny that God can not alter? Fate arbitrary and cruel!.

Second ....

It just happened. The people of Atheist, said people just thrown into this world.There is no God who gave destiny. So what's happened, good or bad, it just happened to be, a good person could have suffered.Evil peoples can be victorious. All that chance. There is no such thing as rule of law or justice. Not in this world, nor in the world after death. Because there is no world after death. No one lives after death. Everything is gone. Just disappeared.Life is absurb, said the French author, Albert Camus. When viewed from the perspective of the short term, that this life only once and briefly, with no belief in life before and after, what was Camus said, existentialist philosophy supporters that is true.

Third ......

Karma and Reincarnation. The Atheist philosophers, emphasizes the human responsibility to himself. Karl Marx said: "Man is seen as the creator himself and his own liberators. Man himself who determines his fate in the world". Nietzsche was impressed even believe in reincarnation: "Ubermensch will replace the Lord, because he alone determines what is good for him, and believe it will return all things are equal ". Jean Paul Sartre said:" People must accept the burden of his actions and no one can bear to him ". Sartre refused atonement for sins by the death of another person. To a certain extent the doctrine of atheistic humanism, they were similar to the law of karma. But because they do not believe in life after death, their theory of human responsibility was limited and not satisfactory. If there is an evil, but because of political power, economic or religious, was not tried in this world to death, then what is the meaning of responsibility here?

While the law of karma is not limited only in one's life. Each person must be receiving the results of his actions. If not in this life, will be accepted in the life to come. Arnold Toynbee said, karma and reincarnation is more rational than the destiny and the resurrection of the body.

Karma in religious beliefs

Safety or enter heaven because of faith or belief alone, often propagated by the advocates of the Christian religions or Islam. Only through Jesus, the man reached the Father (heaven).Islam the only accepted religion on the side of God.This means that only those who believe Islam is welcomed into heaven by God.

But with this kind of dogma into question.Is it only with one's beliefs into heaven?. Does not determine one's actions, whether to go heaven or hell?. No!. Ryan (Very Idham Henyansyah) is a Muslim and had been tutor children in his village in Jombang.He proved to kill about 10 people, the majority are Muslims. Balinese Tooth Filing Ceremony

The Hindus in Bali get their first blessing ceremony early as they are still in their mother’s tummy. As soon as a woman knows that she is expecting then a range of Manusa Yadnya, the ceremony for human life is started. Metatah is part of Manusa Yadnya which has to be done when a person in considered mature enough to take responsibilities in life. The ceremony aims to reduce the influence of Sad Ripu, six enemies which live inside human that could create emotional instability, which are Kama (uncontrollable desire ), Lobha (Greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (drunk), Moha (confusion) and Matsarya (Envy).

In addition to making a wedding ceremony for their children, conducting the Metatah ceremony is also one of the responsibilities as a Hindu to God and has a parents to their children.

The metatah ceremony start by the priest spelled the mantra and played the Bajra ( the bell usually hold by the Hindu priest in their left hand ). Some prayers have to be said before the main ceremony. The main ceremony took place on a decorative bed made especially for the occasion. One by one will climbed the bed and took a sleeping position while all our love ones surrounded the bed to protect those who were having the ceremony from evil spirits and from others who intend to harm. As we put our head on the pillow we will show the face of the priest and his hands were holding a golden ring. Then he poured us with blessed water. Finally he grinded our front teeth and our fangs with metal while spelling mantras. Magically we didn’t feel hurt even a bit. After that we were given a mirror to see the result. And wow!!! The teeth look cool! Hope our innersoul have been freed from Sad Ripu!.

OLEG TAMBULILINGAN ,A DANCE OF LOVE (a Balinese Dance).

In 1952, I Ketut Maria, a dance maestro from Tabanan regency, Bali, created a dance that is full with the spirit of love. It was John Coast who proposed him to create a new dance since he wanted to take Indonesian artists to Europe and the United State of America for a cultural exchange mission. At the time I Ketut Maria, famously known as I Mario, was around 50 years old and he felt too old and unwell to create a new dance. But after some efforts by John Coast to persuade him, he finally took the challenge. He had already taken some new inspiration but he was stuck, and had almost given up when Coast gave him a collection of books about classic ballet complete with pictures. Those books were the source of the inspiration behind the lovely traditional Balinese dance that we can still see performed nowadays.
The dancers are male and female who perform smooth swaying dance routines. They carry our imagination to a garden where the flowers are blooming and the bees are enjoying their mealtime imbibing the flowers’ essence. The dancers are transformed into bees that are attracted to each other so the male bee is chasing female so on. Flirtation happens over a mealtime which ends up into a beautiful love story where they are finally caressing each other. The whole performance creates such an intense romantic atmosphere also shows that both sexes naturally need each other.
It’s only the routines that are beautiful but also the costumes. The female dancer is wrapped in Balinese traditional fabric called prada (material with gold printed pattern) and has a long transparent yet shiny scarf attached as her wings. The colors of the costume usually bright, a combination of green, rd and yellow and her head carries a massive mountain of golden flowers. The male dancer also wears same type of fabric but with a different way of wrapping. For the male, the end of specific length of fabric is left unwrapped, the Balinese call this kancut. On the head , he wears udeng, the Balinese traditional hat while he carries a prada fan and spins it effortlessly with his right hand.
It has been many years since the maestro created the dance, but Oleg Tambulilingan still has great popularity. The beauty of the dance has successfully charmed whoever has watched the performance over years. The simplicity of the routines, that blends nicely with some routines the Balinese classic dances. Pura Luhur Uluwatu ( Uluwatu Temple)

Pura Luhur Uluwatu sits 600 feet above the sea on the peninsula of the Bukit and is one of Bali’s most spectacular temples, most often visited at sunset as it is one of the most photographed cliff temples on the island. The temple is about 20 km from Denpasar, but everyone will know where it is so you will have no difficulty getting there. The inner sanctum of the temple is magnificently perched on the edge of a step cliff that towers above the powerful wave below. The best views from the temple are from the northern and southern sides. There are many sign posted cautioning tourists to beware of the monkeys, instructing visitors to take off their sunglasses, hide their cameras and pocket their jewelry.

These signs are there for a very good reason, as occasionally the monkeys do get aggressive and there have haven even been suggestions of collusion between the thieving monkeys and the Balinese “finders” who offer to retrieve your possessions – for a finder’s fee of course. Pura Luhur Tanah Lot ( Tanah Lot Temple ).

Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 15th century priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha, who saw the rock-island’s beautiful natural setting during his travels and took his respite there. Some fishermen observed him, and decided to bring him gifts.

After his night on the island, Dang Hyang Nirartha spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock because he indicated that this was a holy place to worship the Balinese Gods. This is perhaps one of Bali’s most photographed locations.

Many people flock here to see the spectacular sunsets. On the cliff tops there are also several restaurants which tourists can relax in and enjoy a nice snack or meal. It is believed that there are poisonous snakes at the base of the rocky island which guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders.

Some people say that there is one giant snake which also watches over the temple. The story goes that this snake was created from Dang Hyang Nirartha’s scarf when he founded the temple.

Today’s materialistic culture often tempts us to spend more on things we desire, instead of on things we need. The more we earn, the more stuff we buy to make ourselves happy. But is this really the path to happiness???

Happiness can be perceived differently from one person to the other, so we need to find our personal source of contentment. Here are some ideas to get you climbing on that ladder toward happiness :

a. Stay Healthy-choose your food better.

Keeping our body fit and healthy, that probably a primordial rule in our quest for happiness. A culinary philosophy that emphasizes organic farming , local and traditional food products. Rein your food budget, and support your local traditional market.

b. Go green-back to nature

Philosophically, green represents peace, balance and growth. It is also the color of nature and symbolizes self-respect and well-being. Moreover, green in the most restful color for human eyes and is believed to have great healing power. Going green, in the sense of going back to nature, can be source of happiness. So, give yourself some time to decompress and make a good connection with Mother Nature.

c. Practice random acts of kindness-be useful.

When we practice good deeds, we feel good about ourselves. That explains why there are people who volunteer their time and energy to help others. The feeling of being useful, not only to our fellow humans but also to other living creatures, gives meaning to our life.

d. Escape materialism-consume less.

If we finally understand that binge-buying can only satisfy our ego for a short while, maybe now is the time to kick the habit. Star by systematically blocking out advertising, be it printed or electronic. So, ensure that when you buy some things, you do so because they serve a clear purpose. It might be helpful to bear this question in mind every time you intend to buy something : “ Do I really need it? “

e. Make connections-develop friendships.

It’s only natural that we urge to share our feelings with other people. Having good, supportive friends and happier. Developing new friendships with people from various walks of life will also trigger joy and excitement. If you succeed in your volunteering efforts, you will find yourself exposed to new people, opening your eyes to world that extends well beyond your daily worries and concerns.

While culture and the natural beauties of Bali are more than enough to attract people to Bali’s shores, these days the parks and attractions are building up a reputation for quality and expertise that makes them well worth visiting.

Probably the best known attractions are the Monkey Forests of Sangeh,Ubud and Alas Kedaton( Kukuh Village of Tabanan Regency ), where checking primates live in fearless harmony with their surroundings. Great fun but be careful not to lose your gleaming sunglasses!.

Bali’s Bird Park has also established a reputation for a great day out with an enormous selection of exotic birds beautifully displayed for all to enjoy.

There’s also a delightful Botanical Garden in Ubud with exotic plants and trees and peaceful walks in the relative cool of the hills, and a new Zoo and Safari Park which seeks to preserve and display Indonesia’s unique wildlife.

But perhaps the most unexpected, and fun, parks is the Elephant Park where some charming pachyderms from Sumatera have been given their own piece of paradise to entertain visitors.

For many surfers who grew up in the 80’s and even into the 90’s, the mention of Uluwatu conjures up a surreal backlit image of an endlessly peeling lefthander breaking over a shallow coral reef.

On small days Uluwatu can get very crowded, as from the cliff top the waves appear easy to catch and well formed. For those intermediate to good surfers this place is a dream come true, but the beginner surfer will find that taking off on a reef break wave is much more intimidating than catching a wave at their local sand bottom beach break. So unless you’re prepared to sacrifice some skin to the razor sharp coral reef when you go over the fall at low tide, or get yelled at constantly by the more proficient surfers for being in the way , be content to watch and enjoy.

The paddle out through The Cave at mid to high tide is a unique experience. You’ll start paddling out towards The Peak and more often that not find yourself being carried north for awhile as the current coming down the reef sweeps you long. Eventually you’ll escape its clutches and make your way back to the take off spot. The most crowded spot at Uluwatu, The Peak works best at mid to high tide and from 1 to about 8 feet. At low tide you stop your paddle short of The Peak and take off at Racetracks, a wave that probably gives up more fun tubes than any other wave at Uluwatu, especially at 4 to 6 feet. But be careful not to get to greedy on the inside, as it often closes out savagely and will dump you onto the shallow reef at the end section.

When the swell gets up to 10 feet plus, Outside Corners becomes the ultimate Uluwatu wave in the sense of getting that “Morning of the Earth” experience. Late afternoon, law tide, and a big drop with a huge wall that just begs to be carved apart, and if you get lucky a nice barrel section will present itself. It can be a very long and thigh burning adventure, but a most memorable and sought after prize.

But if you are looking to escape the crowds and have sufficient reef surfing experience, you may want to paddle south until you are in front of the temple to surf Temples, which is the farthest point in the lineup and breaks in quite shallow water. But it can be a good bet on those smaller days when the other spots get too crowded.

Don’t forget, especially o those mid to high tide sessions when the waves are sizeable and the current is strong, to paddle south a bit farther than you think you need before aiming for The Cave to paddle back in. if you miss it the first time, you will either find yourself having a long paddle back out to try again or be swept down to Padang-Padang beach. Either way it’s a long trip home.

No trip to Bali would be complete without a trip out to Uluwatu, as it is truly the icon of Bali surfing. And if you have the skills, get on out there and have your own “ Morning of the Earth” experience, you will remember it forever.

The Hindu-Balinese faith touches every aspect of the people’s life. Every community has at least a temple or pura. The largest and holiest temple in Bali is Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, well over a thousand years old. Steps ascend through split gates to Besakih’s main courtyard where the Trinity shrines are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. around the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, are 18 separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups. To the Balinese, a visit to the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The ancient temple of Tirta Empul is built around the sacred spring of Tampaksiring. Tanah Lot is an important sea temple dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. On the shores of Lake Beratan, Ulun Danu is often shrouded in mist and hauntingly beautiful.

The Balinese also believe that spirits dwell in every element of nature and many places are considered sacred, such as the ten hectares nutmeg forest of Sangeh and Alas Kedaton which abounds with monkeys.

Wayang Kulit or Balinese Shadow Puppet

Sesame Street may be the ideal storytelling medium of western kids of worlwide, but the Balinese sticks to its aged-old Wayang Kulit or shadow puppets.

An oil lamp flame licks and glimmers through a thin white cloth screen as melodies air from the gamelan ensemble. A crowd gathers in front of the center of attraction. Their eyes struggle to adjust as they begin to focus in the dimly it space. Silhouettes dash across the screen to the typical knocking of wood. The dalang (puppet master) is set and his show about to begin. The screen flutters with hazy objects, moving in the time to the music. The image suddenly becomes clear as all the other puppets appear, pressed against the screen and appearing more in focus.

These shows can be magical, with audiences entranced by the shadow puppets’ movements and the beautiful sounds of the gamelan. Even though most foreigners witnessing the show won’t understand the ancient Kawi or Balinese used in the dalang’s dialogues, most are still entertained by the story. Recently, the next generation island puppet masters have twisted the custom a bit and displayed out of the box creativity, such as Nardayana and his humorous Cenk Blonk puppet characters, and many other dalangs occasionally interject some Indonesian slang, Balinese accented English, and quirky Japanese, inviting the grins of foreigners and the laughs of the locals.

Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry has many in-depth lessons and are the ideal portrayal of good conduct rooted in centuries-old Hindu text. The puppeteers themselves would easily be regarded as the island’s version of Mel Blanc, with their versatile and dynamic vocal skills. Some of the clown or battle scenes are easily reminiscent of the grotesque humor of Punch “n Judy, with the dashing and clashing of opponents.

A dalang must have among the most rare skills on earth. He must master many character voices – a voice actor on his own through a whole screenplay. He is a single person who controls the play, thus he must know the various stories and folklore and be able to cue in time with the music.

Shows always start with a simple ritual to ask for divine permission and guidance to achieve the best performance, and blessings are made also for the puppets. And it is the day of Tumpek Wayang, the Balinese 210-day Pawukon calendar system, a day for the blessing of the puppets and show items that accompany the performances.

Gifted dalangs bring the live even apparently ordinary puppet shapes, which in turn represent a distinctive character from popular Hindu epics, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

The usual Wayang is performed at night. Variations on this style of puppetry have been especially popular in Asia for hundreds, and possibly thousands, of years. There are special occasions when Wayang is performed in the light of day, a performance named Wayang Lemah.

In Bali, Wayang Kulit performeces involve between 3 and 15 personnel, including the puppeteer, an assistant, and the gamelan orchestra. Wayang Lemah is performed sans the kelir screen and blencong oil lamps. The dalang plays his puppets against a white cotton string that acts as a frame of the scenes, and tied at either side to an end of dapdap or Erythrina wood, stuck into a length of a banana tree.

Of Corals and Seaweed

Indonesia, which comprises the world’s largest archipelago, is an important habitat and eco-balancing center for the marine life, including coral. It processes the richest assortment of coral species in the world, from fringes and barrier reefs to atolls and patch reefs. Estimates are that Indonesia’s reefs cover 85,700 square kilometers, constituting 14 percent of the world’s coral reefs. And some of then…. can be found in Bali.

An area of shallow coral reef in Bali can be found in the West Bali National Park. It is easily accessible, a calm area free of strong currents and waves that affect most other parts of the island. The spectacular coral reef growth near the land makes for a diving and snorkeling paradise. Because the area is far from the island’s main tourism centers in the south, it is quiet and unspoiled.

People in the West Bali live from the sea. More than 70% of the population goes to sea to catch fish for their daily consumption and look for exotic fish to sell, which are of a high export value. In hopes for better results, they prefer the use of potassium cyanide fishing, which unfortunately has very negative impacts leading up to coral bleaching.

Coral reefs are very fragile and sensitive ecosystem. They are extremely important for biodiversity, providing a home to over 25% of all marine life. They also provide nurseries for many species of commercially important fish, protection of coastal areas from storm waves, and are a significant attraction for the tourism industry.

When people use potassium to “anesthetize” the fish, the algae that contributes to the color of the coral dies. Without the algae the coral has no color, and the white of the limestone shell shines through the transparent coral bodies.

In the middle of 2002, the local community and private sector united themselves as a co-management body called the Communication Forum of Coastal Concerned Society or Forum Komunikasi Masyarakat Peduli Pesisir (FKMPP) for the West Bali National Park. FKMMP was formed in response to the many quarrels happening between the fishermen, the local community, and the elements of the tourism industry and environment organizations concerned with national park conservation.

They chose planting seaweed as a way to increase the local economy. After some up and downs in the business, the found this way the most effective.

Daeng Hayak, 70-year-old man in the Sumber Kima village gained high profits from seaweed. He started off in 2003 and received around Rp.6 million in 2005 from Kafaphicus Alvarezi, a seaweed strand from Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara. He success raised peoples enthusiasm for planting seaweed.

While the men focus on the seaweed planting, the women take part in processing it into snacks. They make seaweed chips, cakes, seaweed gelatins, and also forth. This business became viable and an effective solution for local people’s economy.

Now, 15 hectares of the costal area of Sumber Kima and Pajarakan villge are covered by seaweed. Ecomic increase is one big result, and the coral reef conservation is another. Now the local community conducts daily patrols in West Bali National Park’s waters. Sometimes Javanese and Madurese come to hunt for aquarium fish in this area, and they are welcome as long as they abide by the local rules and do not use potassium or other harmful substances in this efforts.
