Etymologically, the term procession cremation cremation is not always appropriate because sometimes the tradition of cremation is not always all about the procession of burning corpses. In other languages in Bali, cremation is also often referred to with the word palebon. The word is believed to have originated from the word meaning dust or soil dust. So, cremation or palebon is a ceremonial procession for the dead bodies to be earthed (the earth). In the case of land to the Balinese are Hindu community knows two ways to bury or burn it. In other words there is a cremation procession in ceremonial cremation, but cremation does not mean always a cremation. In language, the word cremation comes from the word meaning Beya costs or supplies. Beya said this itself later in the active voice (do work) to meyanin. Meyanin word has become the standard language to name sawa wadhana ceremony. May also be called Ngabeyain. This word is then pronounced with a short, be cremation.

Even so, the origin of the word itself has Ngaben other variants. According to some experts, that the word Ngaben it comes from the word "fire". Said the fire had the prefix "ng" and the suffix "an" becomes "ngapian" who, after experiencing the process of password to "ngapen". And because there is a change phoneme "p" to "b" sound changes according to law "b-p-m-w" then into "cremation". Thus the word Ngaben means "to fire". And because who wants to discuss here Culture Collection is comprised of cremation cremation procession, then presumably it is a good term is also used here.

First of all, and is most essential in this discussion is the place and the tools to cremate the bodies termed pemasmian and tunon. Pemasmian itself a place or container to process the corpse to ashes, which are derived from the word Exterminate language. While tunon itself derived from the word tunu (fuel) is an area where the procession was held. Another word for this is tunon Setra or sema. Setra means moor and sema is another name of Goddess Durga. Core in the main ceremony and cremation itself is called the Tirta Pangentas which aims to break the spirit of love (atma) with wadagnya body (physical) and then drove him back to nature pitra (natural immortality).

Meanwhile, the fire used in the cremation ceremony is divided into two types of fire, namely, fire scale (concrete / concrete) and fire noetic (abstract / surreal). Fire scale is indeed a real fire used to burn the body of the corpse to make it gray. While fire is a fire noetic invisible aiming to burn impurities and sins that attach the spirit. The process of burning dung and their own sins are termed mralina.

In between these two types of fire in the ceremony Ngaben, it turns out that the higher the absolute value and importance is a fire or fire noetic pralines emerged from the Sulinggih. The Sulinggih (the muput) will appeal to Lord Shiva to come down into the body (Siwiarcana) to conduct "pralina". Perhaps because the fire is considered more absolute praline / important, in some mountainous areas in Bali there are implementation Ngaben ceremony without having to burn the corpse with fire, but enough to bury him. Ngaben ceremony of this type is called "Bila Tanem or mratiwi". So it turns out there are also ceremonies Ngaben without using fire (scale). But noetic fire / flame pralines still used by Vedic Sulinggih and Tirtha means praline and pangentas tirtha.

Apart from the issue of fire which is more important. Specifically about the presence of fire scale is functioning as a tool that will accelerate the melting process sthula sarira (gross weight) derived from the Panca Mahabutha to blend back into the Supreme mahabhuta Panca universe. Acceleration of the return process elements Panca mahabhuta will certainly accelerate the process of sanctification also atma to get to the nature Swahloka (Dewa Pitara) so it is worth dilinggihkan in sanggah / merajan to be worshiped. Of course, after going through the ceremony of "mamukur" which is a continuation of "Ngaben".

Types of Common Ngaben on Balinese Hindu Society
In nasyarakat Hindu Bali, cremation ceremony consists of several types are broadly divided into two types of cremation that is simple cremation and cremation loaded (festive). For other types of cremation are included in a simple cremation, among others: mendhem Sawa, Ngaben Partners Yajna, Pranawa, Pranawa Bhuanakosa, and Private. As for cremation which belong to the cremation loaded depending on the type sawa (bodies) that diupakarakan namely Prateka and Sawa Sawa Wedhana.

a. The types are included in Ngaben Simple:

Mendhem Sawa
Mendhem Sawa literally bury. And as I described above, namely that no Ngaben ceremony by burning the bodies or called by "when Tanem or mratiwi". In addition, also, in the Balinese Hindu society there is such a konfensasi to delay the burning of the corpse because tersebab by things like lack of an acceptable cost, being in a state of emergency and so on. Or maybe also with philosophical reasons such as that for ragha sarira from prthiwi element can temporarily ducked the first prthiwi. Which ethis described so that they can smell the mother prthiwi. However, it should be reminded that in principle each of the dead must be in aben. For those who still need time to wait while the sawa (bodies) that should be in pendhem (buried) first. Entrusted to the Goddess penghuluning Setra (Goddess Durga).
Partners Ngaben Yajna
Partners Ngaben Yajna is not really an official name used, but because this type of cremation by Lontar Yama Purwana Tattwa, where the type of cremation is lean, not mentioned by name then to differentiate with other cremation cremation, cremation was then unofficially called Yajna Ngaben Partners . Partners Yajna itself is the origin of the word Pitra Yajna meaning and sacred flame. Broadly speaking, this Yajna Ngaben Partners can be explained as a cremation as defined under the provisions of Yama Purwana Tattwa. Another prominent characteristic of this type of cremation is the cremation ceremony for seven days with arbitrary execution time (do not rely on the calculation of a good day).

Pranawa
Pranawa is syllable Om Kara. Is the name of the type of cremation which uses sacred letters as a symbol sawa. Where the corpse had been buried three days before the ceremony was held pengabenan Ngeplugin or Ngulapin. Pejati and pengulapan in Jaba Pura Dalem with the means to pejati bebanten. When the day pengabenan Jemek and bones are united in pemasmian. Bones under jemeknya above. Then apply the provisions of such new sawa amranawa died. Ngasti to send as well as the provision of cremation amranawa new sawa died, as has been described.
Pranawa Bhuanakosa
This is the type of cremation to the teachings of Lord Brahma Brghu Rsi, which in essence is a cremation procession for those who have recently died. In Pranawa Bhuanakosa there is no provision that the bodies had previously been buried or not. During the corpse has not been too long dead then cremation of this type can be implemented.

Swasta
Swasta cremation to a person who died and his body was not known to exist, not found (either because of lost or buried for too long), or too far away (die at a distance). Three days before the ceremony was held pengabenan ngulapin, for those who died in the distance is not known where the place, pengulapan ceremony, can be done diperempatan road. And for a long time in pendhem that can not be known mark can be done in Jaba pengulapan Pura Dalem.
b. The types are included in the Draft Ngaben:
The types of Ngaben Sarat is divided into two types depending on the type of body that will diaben namely whether the type or Sawa Sawa Prateka Wedhana.

Sawa Prateka
sawa Prateka is reserved for the newly dead corpse and had never held a funeral at all. The procession itself can dikronologiskan briefly as follows: after the soul leaves the body, then first of all carried out by the deceased family is holding a ceremony for the deceased such as bathing the body, sprinkled with tirta archer, gave him a certain offerings as a dish, with the first Atma was told while on his back earlier.

Sawa Wedhana
Sawa Wedhana is a type of cremation is done to the bodies that have earned a funeral (ngurug). The sawa which have been planted in his name makingsan Setra, deposited on land. Atma was held by Bhatari Durga. Setra leadership. Similarly prihalnya sawa planted. At the time it's called pengupacarakan sawa sawa Wedhana. Three days before pengabenan there upakarannya called ngulapin. Sawa who has been called tawulan dipendhem. They prefer a profession that seems "well" even though the actual type of work that occupied no better than farming.

In that sense, farmers increase revenue opportunities more widely than, for example, workers in the tourism sector, which is only a security guard, a room-boy, cleaners, drivers, etc.. belonging to the work of service in return for the permanent or fixed income group.
Boom of the tourism industry that supports economic activity in developing cities like Denpasar, Gianyar and Tabanan in the 1970-1980 era has stimulated the swift flow of large-scale urbanization of the rural population from all over Bali.

Most of them moved to Denpasar find jobs easily, so few are willing to stay in their villages to work as a farmer. You can be sure that those who are still living in the village, because it has not got a job in big cities.

Not many people know that in Scripture Reg Veda, the farmer is very much revered profession. Look at the Mandala I, Chapter 5, the Sukta 187.5:

TAVA TYE PITO DADATAS, TAVA SVADISTHA TE PITO, PRA SVADMANO RASANAM, TUVIGRIVA IVERATE

O life-giving foods that are tasty, they are precious not only menikmatimu, but also produce, and share them with others. Instead they are simply enjoying the taste of food is an arrogant people.

Further more confirmed again in the Reg Veda Mandala III, Section 5, the Sukta 55.22

NISSIDHVARIS TA OSADHIR UTAPO, RAYIM TA INDRA PRTHIVI BIBHARTI, SAKHAYAS TE VAMABHAJAH SYAMA, MAHAD DEVANAM ASURATVAM EKAM

Live plants for your blessings. Running water, and earth to save their possessions. Hopefully we (farmers) can become your friends and share this blessing, for Thy glory and generosity of nature so great and incomparable.

Farming community has a set of activities that are never out of the worship of Ida Sanghyang Parama Kawi because they are highly dependent of the nature, ranging from the availability of fertile land, adequate water, adequate weather, avoid the diseases and plant pests.

Hence, they are very loving nature, so always pay attention to its sustainability.

Religious ceremonies associated with the life of the agricultural sector held constant, both in small and large scale, such ceremonies: start growing rice, fruit gardens, planting crops, began raising cattle, mabiu kukung, and raise the rice harvest to barn, ngerasakin, ngusaba nini, ngusaba village, immediately kertih, wana kertih, nangluk miserable, etc..

Calendar of Hindu-majority Bali-style set-up ayuning light of the lives of farmers. No exaggeration to say that the peasants are always 'close' and always ask God's protection in performing his job.

Agricultural products as well as the manufacture of staple offerings or offerings. The elements of offerings such as: leaves, fruits, flowers, seeds, animals, all produced by the farmers.

Jobs in the agricultural sector has always requires a lot of manpower ranging from planting rice, eradicate pests, harvesting rice, picking cloves, cocoa, vanilla, fruits, etc..

Coupled with the Subak organizations that regulate the distribution of water and also the sekehe-sekehe manyi, then the realization of work mutual help system which then form a pattern of family life in rural communities as expressed in the proverb:

SAGILIK-SAGULUK SALUNGLUNG SABAYANTAKA, PARAS-PAROS SARPANAYA, SALING ASAH, SALING ASIH, SALING ASUH

Peasant life is full of peace, fraternity and devotion to God, the Creator. In the century 13-15, Bali had been a leading exporter of rice, even to China. The traders from Central Asia, and Southeast Asia are competing to buy rice to Bali, Bali is famous for fluffier rice, fragrant, and tasty.

In addition, fruits, brown, orange, mangosteen, mango, and wani of Bali is famous throughout the world. Why is the triumph of Bali's forget the past? Just because the glare with the dollar and the hustle and bustle of the tourist industry?

We think there is a more promising life, but the agrarian sector has proven to bring prosperity to the people. Bali is not Bali if no agriculture. Religious traditions, culture, and tourism all grounded in agrarian sector. Therefore, let us return to the agrarian sector, the agricultural sector in the broad sense.

Do not leave land idle, also do not sell the land, do not despise the profession of farmers. Let us fix together so that agriculture becomes interesting.

These improvements include areas; modern agricultural technologies, marketing systems, the risk of crop failure insurance (crops insurance), etc.. When we come together to build farms, it works. Realize steady Bali through agrarian reform sector.

Other countries such as Thailand and Phillipines, agrarian-based economy remains national. Governments in countries that are very concerned and defend the interests of farmers. Various seeds have been introduced by both the State and received world acclaim.

The government guarantees the balance between the price of seeds, fertilizers, drugs with a price of harvest. Protection by establishing a benchmark yield the lowest market price, sometimes it felt quite heavy by other residents who do not work in the agricultural sector. But that also stimulate the agricultural sector to still exist.

We are in Bali to try self-sufficient in order to design an agricultural sectors. There are still many agricultural areas that have not worked well. Look at the potential of marine / fisheries, the potential for animal husbandry, processing of fruits like grapes, snake fruit, mango, and pineapple. The results of vegetables and flowers in abundance.

It would be glorious if the manners of Bali that have strong capital investing not only in the field of tourism industry alone. Better compiled for distribution to agrarian sector either directly or possibly through Cooperative Krama Bali, which is now up and growing.

In addition we are experts in the field of agricultural technology, agricultural economics, and marketing field pretty much. Stay utilize them only in a system of management that Hindu-Balinese nuance.

Om A No bhadrah krattavo yantu visvatah.

Tri Hita Karana Establishing Life Harmonious Society in Bali

A. From every sense of the word in it, Tri means three; Kaya means the Work or any act or work or behavior, while Parisudha means "purification efforts". So "Trikaya-Parisudha mean" the effort of cleaning / disinfection of the three deeds or our behavior. "

Purification MIND (MANACIKA)

These actions should be prioritized, because basically everything begins here. This became the basis of our behavior to another (words and deeds); of pure mind will be reflected and transmitted light that remedy, the people around us, rather murky mind would complicate our affairs, although there was no need that difficult. Naturally knotty or not an issue, so depending on how we perceive and how we react to it.

If our view is narrow and dark, everything will be crowded and stuffy. Conversely, if we view the light, all things will be evident very clear. Like wearing glasses, sightings received by the eye is very dependent on the cleanliness, the color of the lens material, and the sophistication of the lens material. So, whatever the presence of a presence, providing radiant objective for us, but we generally can not catch it with an objective.

This dirty view will show the dirty object and impure in the eyes of us. If a similar point of view that we use are looking at various phenomena of life and the lives, of our lives become complicated, causing grief, sorrow, and various conditions of negative thoughts. This is what happens in our minds. Our minds get dirty and bleak view of our own. For that only we ourselves who can clean it up. This is mentioned in the Hindu: "no creature of any nature that can purify our minds, if we are not moving and working toward it, especially material things, of course could not be purified to anyone".

To purify the mind, need to improve the view first. To improve the view, both necessary and sufficient understanding about the philosophy of religion that can be learned from the scriptures and the guidance of teachers. Through this, a lot of darkness and inner turmoil we become dissipated, the publication of a bright light in the mind through his guidance, help expedite the process towards its final destination.

Three kinds of implementation of control in an attempt to purify the mind, mentioned in the Saracamuscaya, are:

1. Do not want something that is not feasible or permissible.
2. Not so negative towards other creatures.
3. To not deny of THE LAW OF KARMA.

Thus the one mentioned in the Hindu Scriptures, if we look at the core of the three things above is that with the schools as the law of karma phala regulator which is universal, can guide them, who believed it to patterned think is right and holy.

Purification words (WACIKA).

There are four kinds of actions through words that should be in control, namely:

1. Do not like berate.
2. Not to speak harshly to anyone.
3. Not to degrades, much less malign other creatures.
4. No broken a promise or tell lies.

That is mentioned in Sarasamuscaya; it is clear to us that how actually all practical guidance for inward purification have been available. We should be able to implement it in accordance with their respective capabilities.

CONDUCT PHYSICAL purification and BEHAVIOUR (Kayika).

There are three main things that must be controlled, namely:

1. No harm, torture, let alone to kill other creatures.
2. No cheating, so the resulting harm anyone.
3. No adultery or other similar.

So ten things important in the implementation of the Tri Kaya Parisudha accordance with what is described in the book of Saracamuscaya. Tri Kaya Parisudha practice in daily life is necessary

KARMA ( part 4 )

IMPLICATIONS OF FAITH BEHAVIOR

<span style="direction: ltr; get their first blessing ceremony early as they are still in their mother’s tummy. As soon as a woman knows that she is expecting then a range of Manusa Yadnya, the ceremony for human life is started. Metatah is part of Manusa Yadnya which has to be done when a person in considered mature enough to take responsibilities in life. The ceremony aims to reduce the influence of Sad Ripu, six enemies which live inside human that could create emotional instability, which are Kama (uncontrollable desire ), Lobha (Greed), Krodha (anger), Mada (drunk), Moha (confusion) and Matsarya (Envy).

In addition to making a wedding ceremony for their children, conducting the Metatah ceremony is also one of the responsibilities as a Hindu to God and has a parents to their children.

The metatah ceremony start by the priest spelled the mantra and played the Bajra ( the bell usually hold by the Hindu priest in their left hand ). Some prayers have to be said before the main ceremony. The main ceremony took place on a decorative bed made especially for the occasion. One by one will climbed the bed and took a sleeping position while all our love ones surrounded the bed to protect those who were having the ceremony from evil spirits and from others who intend to harm. As we put our head on the pillow we will show the face of the priest and his hands were holding a golden ring. Then he poured us with blessed water. Finally he grinded our front teeth and our fangs with metal while spelling mantras. Magically we didn’t feel hurt even a bit. After that we were given a mirror to see the result. And wow!!! The teeth look cool! Hope our innersoul have been freed from Sad Ripu!.

OLEG TAMBULILINGAN ,A DANCE OF LOVE (a Balinese Dance).

In 1952, I Ketut Maria, a dance maestro from Tabanan regency, Bali, created a dance that is full with the spirit of love. It was John Coast who proposed him to create a new dance since he wanted to take Indonesian artists to Europe and the United State of America for a cultural exchange mission. At the time I Ketut Maria, famously known as I Mario, was around 50 years old and he felt too old and unwell to create a new dance. But after some efforts by John Coast to persuade him, he finally took the challenge. He had already taken some new inspiration but he was stuck, and had almost given up when Coast gave him a collection of books about classic ballet complete with pictures. Those books were the source of the inspiration behind the lovely traditional Balinese dance that we can still see performed nowadays.
The dancers are male and female who perform smooth swaying dance routines. They carry our imagination to a garden where the flowers are blooming and the bees are enjoying their mealtime imbibing the flowers’ essence. The dancers are transformed into bees that are attracted to each other so the male bee is chasing female so on. Flirtation happens over a mealtime which ends up into a beautiful love story where they are finally caressing each other. The whole performance creates such an intense romantic atmosphere also shows that both sexes naturally need each other.
It’s only the routines that are beautiful but also the costumes. The female dancer is wrapped in Balinese traditional fabric called prada (material with gold printed pattern) and has a long transparent yet shiny scarf attached as her wings. The colors of the costume usually bright, a combination of green, rd and yellow and her head carries a massive mountain of golden flowers. The male dancer also wears same type of fabric but with a different way of wrapping. For the male, the end of specific length of fabric is left unwrapped, the Balinese call this kancut. On the head , he wears udeng, the Balinese traditional hat while he carries a prada fan and spins it effortlessly with his right hand.
It has been many years since the maestro created the dance, but Oleg Tambulilingan still has great popularity. The beauty of the dance has successfully charmed whoever has watched the performance over years. The simplicity of the routines, that blends nicely with some routines the Balinese classic dances. Janger and Legong Keraton, show the story the creator wanted to tell clearly. The routines and the colors of what the dancers wear are just simply impressive.

Yoga is Fenomenal Hindu Teachings.

The noble teachings of yoga come inside to the identity of real people, in the middle of the noise in the stress, take a yoga is important.

One of the teachings of the Hindu yoga, Rsi Patanjali is Weda formulate a flexible and universal teachings, develop ritmis natural movement into an academic level.

Yoga Darsana classified into tattwa and can not be separated by samkhya. The temple is about 20 km from Denpasar, but everyone will know where it is so you will have no difficulty getting there. The inner sanctum of the temple is magnificently perched on the edge of a step cliff that towers above the powerful wave below. The best views from the temple are from the northern and southern sides. There are many sign posted cautioning tourists to beware of the monkeys, instructing visitors to take off their sunglasses, hide their cameras and pocket their jewelry.

These signs are there for a very good reason, as occasionally the monkeys do get aggressive and there have haven even been suggestions of collusion between the thieving monkeys and the Balinese “finders” who offer to retrieve your possessions – for a finder’s fee of course. Uluwatu is one of the six most important Sad Kahyangan temples in Bali. It is believed that is location on the most south-western point of the island serves to guard the Balinese from the evil spirits of the ocean.

Pura Luhur Tanah Lot ( Tanah Lot Temple ).

Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 15th century priest named Dang Hyang Nirartha, who saw the rock-island’s beautiful natural setting during his travels and took his respite there. Some fishermen observed him, and decided to bring him gifts.

After his night on the island, Dang Hyang Nirartha spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock because he indicated that this was a holy place to worship the Balinese Gods. This is perhaps one of Bali’s most photographed locations.

Many people flock here to see the spectacular sunsets. On the cliff tops there are also several restaurants which tourists can relax in and enjoy a nice snack or meal. It is believed that there are poisonous snakes at the base of the rocky island which guard the temple from evil spirits and intruders.

Some people say that there is one giant snake which also watches over the temple. The story goes that this snake was created from Dang Hyang Nirartha’s scarf when he founded the temple.

Seeking Happiness

Today’s materialistic culture often tempts us to spend more on things we desire, instead of on things we need. scheme='http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#' term='liburan'/>
Wave Of Dreams!!!!

Om,Suastiastu…
For many surfers who grew up in the 80’s and even into the 90’s, the mention of Uluwatu conjures up a surreal backlit image of an endlessly peeling lefthander breaking over a shallow coral reef.

On small days Uluwatu can get very crowded, as from the cliff top the waves appear easy to catch and well formed. For those intermediate to good surfers this place is a dream come true, but the beginner surfer will find that taking off on a reef break wave is much more intimidating than catching a wave at their local sand bottom beach break. So unless you’re prepared to sacrifice some skin to the razor sharp coral reef when you go over the fall at low tide, or get yelled at constantly by the more proficient surfers for being in the way , be content to watch and enjoy.

The paddle out through The Cave at mid to high tide is a unique experience. You’ll start paddling out towards The Peak and more often that not find yourself being carried north for awhile as the current coming down the reef sweeps you long. Eventually you’ll escape its clutches and make your way back to the take off spot. The most crowded spot at Uluwatu, The Peak works best at mid to high tide and from 1 to about 8 feet. At low tide you stop your paddle short of The Peak and take off at Racetracks, a wave that probably gives up more fun tubes than any other wave at Uluwatu, especially at 4 to 6 feet. But be careful not to get to greedy on the inside, as it often closes out savagely and will dump you onto the shallow reef at the end section.

When the swell gets up to 10 feet plus, Outside Corners becomes the ultimate Uluwatu wave in the sense of getting that “Morning of the Earth” experience. Late afternoon, law tide, and a big drop with a huge wall that just begs to be carved apart, and if you get lucky a nice barrel section will present itself. It can be a very long and thigh burning adventure, but a most memorable and sought after prize.

But if you are looking to escape the crowds and have sufficient reef surfing experience, you may want to paddle south until you are in front of the temple to surf Temples, which is the farthest point in the lineup and breaks in quite shallow water. But it can be a good bet on those smaller days when the other spots get too crowded.

Don’t forget, especially o those mid to high tide sessions when the waves are sizeable and the current is strong, to paddle south a bit farther than you think you need before aiming for The Cave to paddle back in. if you miss it the first time, you will either find yourself having a long paddle back out to try again or be swept down to Padang-Padang beach. Either way it’s a long trip home.

No trip to Bali would be complete without a trip out to Uluwatu, as it is truly the icon of Bali surfing. And if you have the skills, get on out there and have your own “ Morning of the Earth” experience, you will remember it forever.

Om,Shanti,Shanti,Shanti,Om.

Ubud Bali

Om,Suastiastu…

Ubud is truly the heartland of Bali, both geographically and culturally. Ancient costumes, a rich artistic heritage, and warm hospitality converge in the symbolic heart of the island. Add to this the endless views lush green rice paddies and forests, and visitors will begin to understand the mystical beauty for which Ubud is famous.

Ubud’s scenic countryside consists of gently sloping hills and picturesque rice paddies, which offer great walking and cycling trails. Take a tour and discover the smaller villages around central Ubud that still contain groups of artisan families – an exciting way to see Balinese art in the making. Ubud is also the ideal place to take in Balinese dance. The Legong, Ramayana, and Kecak are performed nightly in and around the Ubud area, the most accessible venue being the Puri Saren Agung ( Ubud Palace ) in central Ubud.

For the more active traveler, Ubud also has a choice of outward-bound pursuits. The rushing waters of Ayung River are ideal for a day of rafting. For wildlife lovers, must-sees include the Bali Bird Park and Reptile Park in southern Ubud, the sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in central Ubud, and the Elephant Safari Park to the north.

Thanks.

Om,Shanti,Shanti,Shanti,Om.

Bali Island Of The God

Om,Suastiastu…

Endowed with great natural beauty and rich culture, Bali has long been the popular tourist destination in Indonesia. Every community has at least a temple or pura. The largest and holiest temple in Bali is Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung, well over a thousand years old. Steps ascend through split gates to Besakih’s main courtyard where the Trinity shrines are wrapped in cloth and decorated with flower offerings. around the three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, are 18 separate sanctuaries belonging to different regencies and caste groups. To the Balinese, a visit to the temple sanctuaries is a special pilgrimage. The ancient temple of Tirta Empul is built around the sacred spring of Tampaksiring. Tanah Lot is an important sea temple dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea. On the shores of Lake Beratan, Ulun Danu is often shrouded in mist and hauntingly beautiful.

The Balinese also believe that spirits dwell in every element of nature and many places are considered sacred, such as the ten hectares nutmeg forest of Sangeh and Alas Kedaton which abounds with monkeys.

Om,Shanti,Shanti,Shanti,Om.

Wayang Kulit or Balinese Shadow Puppet

Sesame Street may be the ideal storytelling medium of western kids of worlwide, but the Balinese sticks to its aged-old Wayang Kulit or shadow puppets.

An oil lamp flame licks and glimmers through a thin white cloth screen as melodies air from the gamelan ensemble. A crowd gathers in front of the center of attraction. Their eyes struggle to adjust as they begin to focus in the dimly it space. Silhouettes dash across the screen to the typical knocking of wood. The dalang (puppet master) is set and his show about to begin. The screen flutters with hazy objects, moving in the time to the music. The image suddenly becomes clear as all the other puppets appear, pressed against the screen and appearing more in focus.

These shows can be magical, with audiences entranced by the shadow puppets’ movements and the beautiful sounds of the gamelan. Even though most foreigners witnessing the show won’t understand the ancient Kawi or Balinese used in the dalang’s dialogues, most are still entertained by the story. Recently, the next generation island puppet masters have twisted the custom a bit and displayed out of the box creativity, such as Nardayana and his humorous Cenk Blonk puppet characters, and many other dalangs occasionally interject some Indonesian slang, Balinese accented English, and quirky Japanese, inviting the grins of foreigners and the laughs of the locals.

Wayang Kulit shadow puppetry has many in-depth lessons and are the ideal portrayal of good conduct rooted in centuries-old Hindu text. The puppeteers themselves would easily be regarded as the island’s version of Mel Blanc, with their versatile and dynamic vocal skills. Some of the clown or battle scenes are easily reminiscent of the grotesque humor of Punch “n Judy, with the dashing and clashing of opponents.

A dalang must have among the most rare skills on earth. He must master many character voices – a voice actor on his own through a whole screenplay. He is a single person who controls the play, thus he must know the various stories and folklore and be able to cue in time with the music.

Shows always start with a simple ritual to ask for divine permission and guidance to achieve the best performance, and blessings are made also for the puppets. And it is the day of Tumpek Wayang, the Balinese 210-day Pawukon calendar system, a day for the blessing of the puppets and show items that accompany the performances.

Gifted dalangs bring the live even apparently ordinary puppet shapes, which in turn represent a distinctive character from popular Hindu epics, such as the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

The usual Wayang is performed at night. Variations on this style of puppetry have been especially popular in Asia for hundreds, and possibly thousands, of years. There are special occasions when Wayang is performed in the light of day, a performance named Wayang Lemah.

In Bali, Wayang Kulit performeces involve between 3 and 15 personnel, including the puppeteer, an assistant, and the gamelan orchestra. Wayang Lemah is performed sans the kelir screen and blencong oil lamps. The dalang plays his puppets against a white cotton string that acts as a frame of the scenes, and tied at either side to an end of dapdap or Erythrina wood, stuck into a length of a banana tree.

Thank you.

Of Corals and Seaweed

Indonesia, which comprises the world’s largest archipelago, is an important habitat and eco-balancing center for the marine life, including coral. It processes the richest assortment of coral species in the world, from fringes and barrier reefs to atolls and patch reefs. Estimates are that Indonesia’s reefs cover 85,700 square kilometers, constituting 14 percent of the world’s coral reefs. And some of then…. can be found in Bali.

An area of shallow coral reef in Bali can be found in the West Bali National Park. It is easily accessible, a calm area free of strong currents and waves that affect most other parts of the island. The spectacular coral reef growth near the land makes for a diving and snorkeling paradise. Because the area is far from the island’s main tourism centers in the south, it is quiet and unspoiled.

People in the West Bali live from the sea. More than 70% of the population goes to sea to catch fish for their daily consumption and look for exotic fish to sell, which are of a high export value. In hopes for better results, they prefer the use of potassium cyanide fishing, which unfortunately has very negative impacts leading up to coral bleaching.

Coral reefs are very fragile and sensitive ecosystem. They are extremely important for biodiversity, providing a home to over 25% of all marine life. They also provide nurseries for many species of commercially important fish, protection of coastal areas from storm waves, and are a significant attraction for the tourism industry.

When people use potassium to “anesthetize” the fish, the algae that contributes to the color of the coral dies.
